I surprised a phoebe near the house…

The white throated sparrows are back and singing their clear, piping songs. I wonder if this one is as perplexed by the April snow as we are…

Blue is back!

The bluebirds have returned!
The bluebirds have returned!

A pair of bluebirds have arrived in our front field this morning. Here, the male poses in all his glory. Interestingly, a tree swallow showed up at the same time! I saw them eyeing the same box…

One of the flock of wild turkeys keeps a wary eye on me as I take a shot on Taft Hill yesterday.

Purple finch

As I walked outside yesterday morning to head out for a morning ski, I heard a mellifluous song coming from the oak tree at the edge of our front field. Looking up, I spotted this bright, raspberry splashed bird sitting in the tree singing his little heart out in the morning sun.  I rushed back in the house to grab my camera, hoping that he’d still be there, and he was! It was a great way to greet the morning!

This is a repost from my East Street Weather Blog, so sorry for the double exposure to those of you who subscribe to both. I came across this while nordic skiing nearby. There were several impressions in the snow beneath a row of paper birch trees. The chickadees had been feeding on the seed.
