Sony RX100 II, 10.4mm, ISO 160, f/5.6, 1/15″ exposure

Another shot with the RX100 II. This was hand-held as I was testing the image stabilization capabilities of the camera. Not too bad…

Lichen & Water

A lichen-encrusted cherry tree by Fargo Brook

This cherry tree is a stalwart next to Fargo Brook. Given that the brook has been rather unruly in the past couple of years and jumped its banks due to flooding rains, I wonder how long the tree will last before its hold is eroded and it falls like many other trees before it.

Nikon D600, Sigma 105mm macro, ISO 800, f/4.5, 1/2500″ exposure.

Hosta Drops

Rain water cascades off hosta leaves by our front porch
Rain water cascades off hosta leaves by our front porch

As the rain came down off of our front porch roof, it dripped on to the hostas growing below. Water was pooling on the leaves and cascading from their very functional tips. I struggled with the proper shutter speed to capture this as the leaves themselves were moving quite a bit as the rain hit them. This 1/500″ exposure just about captures it…

Drowning Morning Glory

A morning glory nearly submerged in our pond

I saw this morning glory blossom floating on the surface of our pond, but it wasn’t until I’d zoomed in close that I noticed the fine puckering of the water around its edges due to the surface tension. I was about to change lenses when I heard a rush of wind and the roar of rain coming in over the hill above our front field. I made it to cover just as the sky let loose. By the time the storm had passed, the blossom had been submerged.

River Bottom Blur

Flowing water blurs river bottom stones in the Huntington River

A veil of flowing water transforms colorful river bottom stones into an expressionistic splotches of color. The shot was taken knee-deep in the Huntington Rive near the Green Mountain Audubon Center in Huntington.

Fern in Water

Morning sun backlights this single fern frond and droplets of wave splash along the shore of Indian Lake. A fast shutter speed freezes that action.

Green Tea

Green reflections and tea tinted waters

A close-in shot of tannin tinted, tea colored water and reflections from the surrounding trees. This is from the same Adirondack stream of my previous two posts. Here, I’m experimenting further with shutter speed and the levels of reflectivity that can be “dialed in” using a circular polarizing filter.

Tannin Stream in the Adirondacks

Tea colored waters flowing into Indian Lake
Tea colored waters flowing into Indian Lake

The tannin tinted waters of an unnamed stream flowing into Indian Lake in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. Recent rains have made many of these smaller brooks run high.
