Open Water

Calm, open water at Shelburne beach

We went down to Shelburne yesterday to check out an interesting exhibit of rug-hooked renderings of Tarot cards at the All Souls Interfaith center (highly recommended!) Afterwards we drove down to the Shelburne town beach to catch the view. As one might expect from this winter, the lake was wide open. I liked the way the slips of ice had covered the rocks in the foreground.

Café au Lait

Heavy rains on Sunday filled Fargo Brook with muddy, café au last colored water. Here’s a brief study of flowing water at slow-ish shutter speeds (Panasonic Lumix GM5, Lumix 14-140mm lens at various lengths, ISO 200, various apertures, 1/15″ exposures.)

Encasing

Oak leaves becoming encased in mineral deposits at Saratoga Springs

We spent the Thanksgiving weekend with family in Saratoga Springs. While exploring the State Park, I came across these oak leaved as they were slowly being coated and encased by mineral deposits flowing out of one of the springs.

Dangling

Built up ice dangles from a twig above Fargo Brook

Cold temperature make for interesting ice formation. This pendulous pod of ice had built up on a twig just above the moving surface of Fargo Brook.

Contrails

There’s a story behind these photos: Robin & I were in Boothbay Harbor the other evening. We had noticed two young women—dressed very fashionably and sporting carefully applied makeup—taking selfie after selfie of themselves in various places around town. We were on the footbridge across the harbor, and the two women were there, taking selfies of course. As they passed us, a yellow flower fell out of one woman’s hair and onto the bridge. Robin picked up the flower—smelling of the woman’s perfume—and tossed it onto the water. As we watched it drift, we noticed the contrails reflected in the water. Photography ensued…

Flowing

I’ve been getting to know a new camera and putting it through its paces on some of my favorite subjects. This shot of Cobb Brook in low water seems to indicate that the camera might be a keeper…

More rain…

And a little more rain in Fargo Brook

Another inch or two of rain and Fargo Brook jumps its banks. Standing on the bridge taking this shot was an interesting experience…

High and muddy

We’ve gotten over 2.5″ of rain in the past 36 hours and Fargo Brook is running high and muddy.

The water is running in Fargo Brook as the snow melts at higher elevations. A slow shutter speed captures some interesting textures.
