Curl

Fall is on its way. This maple leaf was on a broken branch along the road and backlit by the morning sun. I like the way the leaf’s veins are visible.

Cellophane flow

Water over rocks like cellophane

The right shutter speed and light angle combine to make flowing water look like cellophane molded over rocks.

Beads

These tiny beads of dew were clinging to a low-slung spider’s web in the grass by the pond. I’d say the largest drops were smaller than half-a-millimeter.

Light Scribbles

Reflected sunlight creates doodles in flowing water
Reflected sunlight creates dancing scribbles on flowing water

The first time I stumbled upon this phenomenon of light scribbles in falling water, I was hooked. The key is finding spots on the water that are getting direct sunlight. A polarizing filter and slow shutter speed do the trick to capture some fanciful scribbles…

The eyes have it

There were a lot of these tiny flies—maybe 4mm in length—buzzing about in our front field the other day. Try as I might, I can’t find an ID on this fellow. Anyone have an idea?

Jeepers creepers…

I followed this jumping spider through the grasses and ferns of our front field for quite some time before I could get this shot.
