We watched this brown pelican for quite a while as it hunted off the shore of Bahia Honda Beach in the Florida Keys. This shot is nanoseconds before splashing in.

We went on a little stroll along the trails of the Warren & Grace Beeken Riverside Preserve in Richmond the other day. Cold morning temperatures had allowed thin ice to form in a vernal pool in the flood plain. As the water receded during the day, the ice was suspended in the air, still clinging to the objects that had help form it. Lovely!

The ice along the edges of our pond is slowly receding. This maple leaf from last fall emerges…

The recent heavy rains kicked up many big blocks of ice along the Huntington River. I took a walk along the banks at the Audubon Nature Center here in Huntington yesterday. This is a close-up of a broken 6″ thick slab. I like the air bubbles trapped in the ice.

Our temperature got down to -24f this morning. I knew there would be some lovely ice crystals forming along the fringes of open water in Fargo Brook. I wasn’t disappointed! These delicate “frost feathers” are only about 2mm across. Fine indeed!

We went down to Shelburne yesterday to check out an interesting exhibit of rug-hooked renderings of Tarot cards at the All Souls Interfaith center (highly recommended!) Afterwards we drove down to the Shelburne town beach to catch the view. As one might expect from this winter, the lake was wide open. I liked the way the slips of ice had covered the rocks in the foreground.

Heavy rains on Sunday filled Fargo Brook with muddy, café au last colored water. Here’s a brief study of flowing water at slow-ish shutter speeds (Panasonic Lumix GM5, Lumix 14-140mm lens at various lengths, ISO 200, various apertures, 1/15″ exposures.)

Cold temperature make for interesting ice formation. This pendulous pod of ice had built up on a twig just above the moving surface of Fargo Brook.
