Gold and copper

Beech trees are some of the late fall holdouts—keeping a tenacious grip on their leaves sometimes all the way through the winter. I love the way their leaves shift from green to gold to copper and then, sometimes, to ghostly bleached white in the wintertime.

Carpeted

A walk in the woods this time of year is a very colorful experience!

Standout

A uniquely veined maple leaf…

We were walking in the woods behind the house yesterday afternoon when we came across some uniquely veined maple leaves on the snow-dusted forest floor. One tree in particular had an inkling to stand out…

Wind Gap snowfall

Back to the season at hand… Yesterday afternoon offered some interesting shooting opportunities with low, brooding clouds and intermittent bursts of sunshine. This view up Camel’s Hump Road towards Bald Hill and Wind Gap conveys the mood of the day’s high elevation snowfall.

Low tide

A quick break from fall foliage photos… Here’s a shot from our recent trip to Popham Beach in Maine. Low tide offers wide open spaces and long vistas. I was captivated by the waves breaking just over the horizon of the sandbar at low tide.

Autumn fire

I was up at Windekind Farm yesterday morning looking for good subjects to shoot—not a hard thing to find this time of year! These burning red maple leaves were at the edge of the woods and meadow. Autumn’s fire indeed!

Fall bounty

The Moultrop Family Farm in Richmond has piles of tasty squash for sale at their farmstand. Baked acorn squash with butter and a splash of maple syrup. Yum!

Popham Beach in Maine offers some lovely views and miles of sandy beach. I was struck by this view of a horse and rider (and a person walking a dog) just over the edge of the “mirage” horizon.
